About

The Thunderbird Collective exists to support Indigenous leadership in wildland fire management through advocacy, knowledge sharing, cultural practice, and sovereignty.

Centred in traditional teachings and guided by the understanding that fire brings balance, the Collective brings together Indigenous fire practitioners, Knowledge Carriers, Elders, and Youth to advance Indigenous Fire Stewardship.

Collaboratively, we work to create more resilient communities while upholding Indigenous rights, revitalizing land-based practices, and strengthening Nationhood.

Our Work

The Thunderbird Collective supports Nations pursuing Indigenous Fire Stewardship in their territories across Canada. We have a grant program where we support Nations working on Indigenous Fire Stewardship in the following areas: knowledge sharing, land-based learning, advocacy, and sovereignty.

Knowledge Sharing
Sharing, exchanging, and communicating with one another about Indigenous Fire Stewardship.
Land-Based Learning
Being on the land to bring back Indigenous Fire Stewardship practices.
Advocacy
Working at the local, regional, and national scale to advocate for Indigenous involvement and leadership in fire.
Sovereignty
Working to build autonomy in our territories around decision-making related to fire.

Events

The Thunderbird Collective is proud to host the National Indigenous Fire Gathering, where Indigenous wildfire knowledge holders and Elders are brought together to network and celebrate accomplishments and best practices.
